South Carolina Teacher Expo Hopes to Address Unmet Demand for Teachers

ROCK HILL, SC – Public school districts from across South Carolina will converge upon the South Carolina State Fairgrounds on Friday, May 29th in an effort to fill current and anticipated teaching vacancies.

The one-day job fair attracts jobseekers from across the state and nation and offers them an opportunity to network with representatives from a number of the state’s public school districts.

This year’s Expo, sponsored by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA), is designed to help districts find top-notch candidates to fill shortages in all subject areas and grade levels.

The Expo is part of a comprehensive recruitment effort designed to address teacher shortages in many areas of the state. A report released by CERRA in January highlighted South Carolina’s unmet demand for public school teachers. The number of public school teachers in the state who did not return to their classrooms rose by 5.5%, from just over 5,000 in 2013, to almost 5,300 in 2014. Departures continue to be an area of serious concern when compared to the 2,200 graduates, on average, who completed a South Carolina teacher education program over the last five years.

Participation in the Expo is limited to teachers, recent graduates of teacher education programs, and individuals who have met admission criteria for an approved alternative licensure program in South Carolina.

About The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement

CERRA is the oldest and most established teacher recruitment program in the country. The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement, established by the Commission on Higher Education in December 1985 and funded by the South Carolina General Assembly, was created out of a concern for the condition of South Carolina’s teacher supply pool and a need for a centralized teacher recruitment effort.

CERRA’s agenda is a comprehensive one in which the Center sponsors a variety of programs for increasing the number of students in the education pipeline and recruiting and retaining qualified, caring, and competent teachers. The Center’s primary target groups are middle and high school students, college students, and adults interested in changing careers.

CERRA also targets groups of accomplished teachers through programs including mentoring, teacher leadership and National Board Certification. The network of educators in our programs overlaps in powerful ways to increase the level of collaboration for recruitment, retention and advancement of South Carolina educators.
