COLUMBIA, SC – February 8, 2010 – South Carolina Bar President Fred W. Suggs Jr. has released the following statement:

The South Carolina Bar is deeply saddened by the untimely, violent deaths of two of our members in two days: J. Redmond Coyle of Pickens and Melvin Roberts of York. Both were successful advocates for their clients. Our adversarial system of justice is designed to seek the truth. It works better than other systems since it allows the fact finder to see and weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each side’s case. When lawyers lose their lives because they have been a formidable and effective advocate, our entire system of justice is threatened.

The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 13,000 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
