COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Department of Archives and History announced Wednesday that Geoffrey Hardee has been tapped as the agency’s new communications director. Hardee will report to Dr. W. Eric Emerson, agency director.

As communications director, Geoffrey serves as the agency’s primary media contact and spokesman, focusing on external communications and media relations activities as they pertain to the agency. He will manage all social and traditional media outreach and serve as agency advancement liaison for the department’s foundation and partner organizations.

“We chose Geoffrey for this role because we needed someone who could help elevate public recognition of our agency,” said Dr. Emerson. “Geoffrey has a background that is well-suited for the Department of Archives and History. With extensive experience in broadcast journalism, public relations, fundraising development – and a degree in history, Geoffrey was an ideal candidate for this role, and we are excited to have him on board. He will begin by giving us a fresh look with a new logo and increased public awareness, before beginning work on the overhaul and expansion of our foundation, a 501(c)(3), which enables us to raise philanthropic dollars to support our mission.”

A native of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Geoffrey moved to the Midlands a few years ago and worked in development, first for the University of South Carolina College of Mass Communications, then the South Carolina Policy Council. He is thrilled to return to his love of communications and public relations and has fallen in love with the Palmetto State.

“This is where I want to raise my children,” said Hardee. “South Carolina is now home to me, and the more I learn about her rich history and network with other visionary professionals, the more excited I am about her future.”

Caretaker to 325 years of government records and historic documents, The S.C. Department of Archives and History exists to preserve and promote the documentary and cultural heritage of the Palmetto State through archival care and preservation, records management, public access, preservation of historic sites and education.
