South Carolina is Lagging in 2020 Census Self-Response Rate and Deadline is Looming

September 2, 2020

You’ve probably received several mail pieces requesting that you participate in the 2020 census and maybe even a few emails.  Now County Council and other local community leaders are urging residents to complete the census before the September 30th deadline.

The latest report from the US Census Bureau shows that Laurens County has only a 55.7% self-response rate, which is down almost 3% from the last count in 2010.

Why does it matter?

The census is used to set funding for our schools, roads, internet access, healthcare, and hundreds of other critical community programs. Census data is also used for economic development and we need accurate data to recruit employers. And, finally, the census determines representation. While SC is not projected to gain or lose a house seat at this point in time, the best way to protect our representation and to ensure it reflects our population is to have a complete count of all SC residents.
