Local music series celebrates 500th episode

South Carolina Public Radio series, On the Keys, is tuned to celebrate its 500th episode on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 8 p.m. David Kiser is host and producer of On the Keys, an hour of music played by virtuoso pianists. While the show focuses on piano music, it also features the organ, the harpsichord and most anything that has a keyboard or manual. All genres are explored, including song cycles, concertos, sonatas, amplified piano, and even the piano in the symphony orchestra.

The first year of the program featured three big names and Kiser’s favorite pianists: Horowitz, Richter, and Gould. However, the program has expanded to include up and coming pianists and neglected figures from history. The 500th program will feature segments from Kiser’s favorite past episodes about musicians, pianos, and teachers from South Carolina.

You can listen to On the Keys every Thursday from 8-9 p.m. at https://www.southcarolinapublicradio.org/show/on-the-keys

Quotes:

“On The Keys is an important part of our mission to bring inspiring arts and music programming to our audience across South Carolina and beyond. We are thrilled to celebrate David and his 500th episode!” –SCETV President and CEO Anthony Padgett

“My first episode was ironically not about the piano but about the famous violin tune by Paganini. Eventually the program expanded to include music for other keyboard instruments like the pipe organ and the harpsichord. My program has always had a South Carolina history bent to it with a common theme of exploring how composers share musical ideas across history.” – On the Keys Host David Kiser
