South Carolina Veterinary Specialists Installs State-of-the-Art Eklin Digital Practice(R) Technology

October 22, 2008

COLUMBIA, SC – October 22, 2008 – South Carolina Veterinary Specialists (SCVS), a leading regional veterinary care specialty referral practice, announced it has installed the Eklin Digital Practice(R) at its new state-of-the-art facility in Columbia. The Eklin digital technology includes Eklin’s RapidStart(TM) digital radiography (DR), Ultrasound and VIA(R)practice management software which will all support SCVS’ advanced diagnoses and treatment needs for area patients.

We were founded in 1987 with the goals of providing the best care to our patients and outstanding specialty care support to the regional veterinary community, said Randy Basinger, DVM, Diplomate ACVS, of Southern Carolina Veterinary Specialists. To this end, we chose Eklin’s imaging, image management and practice management software solutions which will significantly help us in meeting these goals. Eklin is recognized for its cutting edge technology and shares in our commitment to excellent patient care.

The new SCVS hospital complex includes surgery, physical therapy and rehabilitation, dermatology, internal medicine, oncology, neurology and cardiology services. In addition to digital radiology and ultrasound, SCVS also provides CT, on-site Antech laboratory testing, laparoscopy, endoscopy, video-otoscopy and chemotherapy. All of the supporting imaging modalities and medical reports are integrated within Eklin’s VIA software and RapidPACS(TM) image management systems.

It is important that we have complete access to a patient’s record at the touch of a button, said Brett Feder, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, Southern Carolina Veterinary Specialists. The seamless integration of all our digital technology into our practice management software and image management system is critical to our ongoing ability to deliver the best care for our patients. Now we can electronically share patient information with other specialists and the referring veterinarian quickly, which often results in faster treatment and better patient outcomes.

Just as digital cameras have made photography easier and more efficient by eliminating film, DR systems provide the veterinarian with a radiographic image that can be viewed immediately onsite or at a review workstation, including a high-resolution monitor, without the need for film development. Sophisticated ultrasound technology provides real-time images for observation of organs, such as the heart, other soft tissue and blood flow.

The digital images are stored, archived and retrieved electronically through Eklin’s RapidPACS system and integrated with the VIA medical record and other reports. Based on DICOM standards, images from all compliant digital imaging modalities (such as ultrasound or CT) can be integrated for a comprehensive view of a patient’s imaging and medical records. This information can be electronically shared throughout SCVS’ expanded facility or with the referring veterinarian.

SCVS’ commitment to outstanding patient care is reflected in its implementation of leading digital technology, said Gary R. Cantu, CEO and chairman, Eklin. We developed the Eklin Digital Practice to provide excellent image quality, workflow efficiencies and data management in support of superior patient care. We are delighted SCVS selected all three of our digital solutions and are pleased to be a part of this team.

An open house for Phase I of the new SCVS facility will be held on October 25, 2008 from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The facility is located at 3924 Fernandina Road in Columbia.
