South Carolinians to shine “Two Lights for Tomorrow” on April 18

April 18, 2025

South Carolina will participate in “Two Lights for Tomorrow” on the night of Friday, April 18, a nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s legendary midnight ride and the opening acts of the American Revolution.

This Friday evening, buildings across the Palmetto State – including government offices, historic landmarks and private homes – are encouraged to shine two lights through the night in recognition of this turning point in American history. The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) is leading the effort statewide, in partnership with national and local organizations.

“Two Lights for Tomorrow” commemorates the night of April 18, 1775, when Revere, along with William Dawes and other riders, spread word of the British advance toward Lexington and Concord. Their warning allowed colonial militias to prepare, leading to the first battles of the American Revolution. The two lanterns hung in Boston’s Old North Church – “two if by sea” – have become enduring symbols of American resolve and independence.

In addition to lighting up the night on April 18, communities across South Carolina are encouraged to host events such as service projects, candlelight vigils, historical reenactments and educational programs that highlight the state’s significant role in the American Revolution. South Carolina was the site of more than 400 battles, skirmishes and events during the Revolutionary-era, the second most in the United States.

For those unable to participate in person, a nationwide digital campaign will extend the reach of the tribute. Participants are invited to share photos of their displays using the hashtag #TwoLightsForTomorrow on social media.

“This is an opportunity for all South Carolinians to come together in reflection and observance of the events that led to America’s independence from Britain,” said Molly Fortune, CEO of SC250. “By shining two lights, we honor the bravery and enduring spirit of those who fought for liberty 250 years ago.”

South Carolina’s participation is part of a broader national initiative coordinated by America250 in preparation for the United States’ 250th birthday in 2026.
