Spartanburg Community College welcomes Dr. Patricia Jones, new Associate Vice President of Instruction

Spartanburg Community College (SCC) recently welcomed Dr. Patricia Jones as associate vice president of instruction, responsible for leading SCC’s academic and non-credit programs as well as leading academic initiatives and curriculum development at the College. She replaces Dr. Keith Pomakoy who became the interim senior vice president for academic affairs at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, New Jersey in July.

“We are excited to have Dr. Jones join our academic team,” said Dr. Cheryl A. Cox, SCC’s senior vice president or academic affairs. “Her wealth of experience in the classroom, as an administrator and a leader in higher education are tremendous assets – all of which will benefit not only our students, but our faculty and staff as well.”

Relocating from Winter Haven, Florida, Jones most recently served as the district dean of academic affairs at Polk State College, where she oversaw and coordinated college-wide curriculum development, researched and managed college-wide issues related to workforce development, led and advanced an honors program, and led academic and student service outreach programs. She has also developed new degree programs, implemented a digital catalog and electronic curriculum management system, worked with prior learning assessment, and developed a tracking system for industry certifications.

Dr. Jones brings over 20 years of experience in community college and higher education to SCC. She previously held positions as:

  • Assistant professor of biology and assistant to the associate dean at John Tyler Community College, VA;
  • Acting director of educational planning at Virginia Community College System;
  • Dean of instruction at Germanna Community College, VA;
  • Associate dean of academic affairs at the University of Mary Washington, VA; and
    Dean of liberal arts and sciences at Polk State College in Florida.
  • Jones earned a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Virginia; a master’s degree in science and teaching from the University of Florida; and a bachelor’s degree in biology and
  • French from the University of Virginia.

 

“I am so excited to be at Spartanburg Community College – I look forward to working with SCC’s outstanding faculty and staff in meeting the educational and economic development needs of the three counties we serve,” adds Jones.

Throughout her educational career, Dr. Jones has been involved with respected organizations including National Collegiate Honors Council, National Council for Workforce Education, Phi Theta Kappa, Rotary and Guardian Ad Litem.

Dr. Jones and her family – spouse, West Jones, a corporate pilot, and their two young children – look forward living in Spartanburg and becoming part of the community.
