Spartanburg Community College Receives Donation from Duke Energy for Student Scholarships

SPARTANBURG, SC – April 11, 2011 –  AlthoughSpartanburg Community College (SCC) has the lowest tuition in the region, manystudents still need assistance to help pay for college. Four students in SCC’sRadiation Protection Program (RPT) received that assistance from funds donatedby Duke Energy.

“We are very grateful to have Duke Energy as an industrypartner. They have been very supportive of SCC’s mission to provide affordableand accessible educational opportunities to area residents and to developworkforce initiatives that foster economic development,” said Sam S. Hook,executive director of the SCC Foundation.

Duke Energy recently made anunrestricted donation to the SCC Foundation, which was awarded as scholarshipsto the following students:

  • Darlynne Galloway, Gaffney,S.C.
  • Erika Patterson, Gaffney,S.C.
  • Mankento Tate, Gaffney,S.C.
  • Robert Weant, Blacksburg,S.C.


“Scholarship gifts are investments in the future benefits we willderive from talented, educated young leaders,” said Theo Lane, district managerof government and community relations for Duke Energy Carolinas. “The RadiationProtection Technology Program partnership with Spartanburg Community Collegeallows Duke Energy to support the educational goals of these talented andfocused young people, that in turn may one day support our nuclear generation’sefforts right here in South Carolina. Our State is blessed to possess a strongcommunity college system, and Duke Energy is proud to support the continuededucational goals of these students.“

SCC’s RPT Program, offered at theSCC Cherokee County Campus in Gaffney, is the only program of its kind in SouthCarolina and was developed through a partnership between the College and DukeEnergy. Each summer, SCC accepts 16 students into the program, which is led byDuke Energy veteran instructors who are Institute of Nuclear Power OperationCertified. Students also have the opportunity to complete on-site internships atlocal nuclear power facilities.
