Spartanburg Community College
Welcomes Record Number of Students

December 7, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – December 7, 2011 – Spartanburg Community College (SCC) has reached a record enrollment of 6,008 students for fall, 2011, with an increase of more than 41 percent in online enrollment.

“We are pleased that more and more students of all ages in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties are seeking quality, affordable higher education at SCC,” said SCC President Para M. Jones, Ph.D. “We offer certificate, diploma and associate degree programs that lead to immediate, rewarding employment, as well as university transfer options. With highly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff, state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, the most affordable tuition in the region and high job placement rates, SCC provides incomparable value to students and families.”

According to Dr. Jones, a higher number of returning students contributed to the fall enrollment increase.

“Our faculty and staff developed and implemented effective strategies to attract and retain students. Faculty, department chairs and deans developed several new programs in high-growth, high-demand fields such as medical coding, emergency medical technician/paramedic and production associate technology, which also contributed to the enrollment growth.

“Our partnerships with K-12 and business and industry have attracted high school students seeking dual-credit programs and adults seeking 21st century technology and professional skills to our multiple campuses,” Dr. Jones pointed out. “However, our greatest growth has been in online courses, which provide convenient college access to busy adult students, including those serving in the military. We are proud to be designated as a ‘Military-Friendly Institution’ and committed to serving active-duty military, veterans and reservists.”
