Employees give more than $54,000 to programs benefitting community in 2015

Spartanburg Water recently received special recognition by the United Way of the Piedmont in three areas: record-breaking monetary pledges in 2015, volunteer hours given in 2015 and for continuing a long tradition of promoting United Way programs to those outside its organization. More than $54,000 was given by employees for United Way community programs in 2015, an increase of 26 percent, and the funds came from departments throughout the organization.

“We are so honored to be recognized by United Way of the Piedmont as being a leader for its programs that continue to benefit the whole community,” said Michael Clardy, Spartanburg Water United Way Program Coordinator. “Not only did we give more than $54,000 in 2015, but those gifts came from employees throughout our organization, from hourly employees up to our executive leadership.”

The utility also had a record-breaking year in volunteer hours given to United Way of the Piedmont. Spartanburg Water employees volunteered hundreds of hours of service in 2015-2016 in a variety of ways, including “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive, 100 Valentine’s Day “Bags of Love” donated to vulnerable seniors, and its April “Day of Service” where employees and their families gave more than 350 hours to four local nonprofits in a single day.

The following awards were given to Spartanburg Water by United Way of the Piedmont:

• Volunteer Spirit Award for volunteer activities and hours given in service in 2015 and 2016, including the Cleveland Park rebuilding project and Day of Service

• Employee Giving Award ($50,000-$100,000) for an employee giving campaign of more than $54,000 for 2015, more than an average $100 given per employee

• Circle of Excellence Award for generous employee giving, utilizing best management practices within its organization and willingness to go beyond monetary gifts by volunteering a substantial amount of hours and by promoting United Way programs outside of the organization. Spartanburg Water had 70 percent participation by its employees, pledging 70 percent of those funds to the United Way’s Community Impact Fund, which focuses on the community’s most pressing needs.
