Special Services Director Robin Simmons announces retirement

LEXINGTON, SC – Lexington County School District One Superintendent Karen Woodward announces that Special Services Director Robin Simmons, Ph.D. plans to retire effective June 30, 2015.

About Simmons Woodward said, “Dr. Robin Simmons has ably led our special needs program for 10 years. She is an outstanding educator and a person of great integrity. She is passionate about serving students with disabilities and a strong advocate to ensure that the needs of our children are met. An exemplary educational leader, she has made a significant mark on Lexington District One.”

Simmons, who has 34 years of experience in public education, began her career in 1972 by serving as special education teacher at the elementary, junior high and high school levels in schools in Fayetteville, N.C. In 1990, she became a special education teacher in Richland School District One and was promoted to special services consultant in 1997.

She joined Lexington County School District One in 2003 as coordinator of preschool services, became coordinator for secondary special education services in 2004 and was promoted to director in 2005.

Simmons holds a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a Master of Science in Learning Disabilities from Kansas State University, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and a Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education Administration from the University of South Carolina.

Currently president of the South Carolina Council of Administrators of Special Education, Simmons is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children at the local, state and national level, the South Carolina Council for Administrators of Special Education, the CEC’s Division of Developmental Delays, the South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.
