Spoleto Festival USA announces 2026 opening ceremony as official launch of Charleston’s festival season
May 21, 2026Spoleto Festival USA announced plans for its 2026 Opening Ceremony, the official launch of the Festival season and a defining public moment marking the shared beginning of Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto across the city of Charleston. Presented in partnership with the City of Charleston and Piccolo Spoleto, Opening Ceremony will take place May 22, 2026, in front of Charleston City Hall and is free and open to the public.
Serving as the ceremonial start of Charleston’s internationally recognized festival season, Opening Ceremony brings together artists, audiences, civic leaders, students, community organizations, and residents in a shared public celebration that officially welcomes the beginning of 17 days of performances, exhibitions, and cultural programming throughout the city. As one of Charleston’s signature annual civic and cultural gatherings, the event reflects the longstanding collaboration among Spoleto Festival USA, the City of Charleston, and Piccolo Spoleto while reinforcing Charleston’s identity as a leading destination for the arts.
“Opening Ceremony represents the spirit of partnership and public celebration that defines this Festival,” said Spoleto Festival USA General Director and CEO Mena Mark Hanna. “It is the moment when the city collectively welcomes the Festival into Charleston’s streets, theaters, parks, and public spaces. Together with the City of Charleston and Piccolo Spoleto, we are proud to create a civic gathering that invites the entire community to participate in this tradition and celebrate the transformative role the arts play in our city.”
“For decades, Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto have been central to Charleston’s cultural identity and international reputation,” said Charleston Mayor William Cogswell. “Opening Ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate the partnerships that make these festivals possible while welcoming residents and visitors alike to experience the creativity, energy, and hospitality of our city.”
“This year’s Piccolo Spoleto will offer residents and visitors a festival like the ones they remember and new experiences that they will never forget,” said Director of Cultural Affairs for the City Rochelle Riley. “Piccolo, as it was always intended, will have a truly Charleston flair.”
The 2026 Opening Ceremony will feature performances by local artists and community organizations, including more than 30 student musicians from The Burke High School High Stepping Bulldog Band, in partnership with Charleston County School District, marking the first time in more than a decade the school’s band has participated in the Festival’s opening celebration. Student musicians from Charleston Jazz Academy will also participate, continuing the Festival’s longstanding relationship with local arts education organizations and highlighting Charleston’s next generation of artists.
Opening Ceremony begins at 12 p.m. on May 22, 2026, in front of Charleston City Hall and is free and open to the public. For more information, visit spoletousa.org.
