Spot fall migrants: birding 101 at Conestee Nature Preserve focuses on Warblers
October 5, 2026Fall migration brings some of the most colorful, energetic songbirds through the Upstate, and Conestee Nature Preserve is offering an easy, accessible way to spot them.
On Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., the preserve will host Birding 101 – Warblers, an introductory field walk tailored specifically for beginners, curious nature lovers, and anyone looking to start their birding journey. Warblers are famous for their lively flitting and vibrant autumn plumage, but their quick movements in the canopy can make them notoriously tricky to identify.
Led by knowledgeable preserve naturalists, participants will learn the ropes from the ground up:
-
How to properly adjust, focus, and use binoculars (provided for every attendee)
-
Key field marks, silhouettes, and listening techniques to quickly identify species
-
Helpful scientific terminology and recommended birding apps and field guides to use at home
No prior experience or personal binoculars are required—all viewing equipment and expert guidance are included with admission. The program is best suited for participants ages 12 and up, and attendees are asked to arrive by 7:45 a.m. at the River Entrance trailhead archway (840 Mauldin Rd.) so the group can hit the trail promptly at 8:00 a.m.
Registration is $10 per person, and trail spots are limited to maintain small group sizes.
