Stage Door Arts Academy welcomes accomplished tap artist and educator Charlie Maybee to summer faculty
May 16, 2026Stage Door Arts Academy is expanding its summer performing arts lineup with the addition of acclaimed tap artist, choreographer, and educator Charlie Maybee.
Beginning this summer, Charlie will lead Tap 1/2 and Tap 2/3 classes during Stage Door’s Summer Session running June 15 through July 24 in Mount Pleasant’s Carolina Park community.
Known for his interdisciplinary approach to movement and performance, Charlie brings a nationally respected background in tap dance, choreography, music, education, and experimental performance work to the Stage Door faculty.
Currently based in Charleston, South Carolina, Charlie serves on faculty with both the Dance Program and Arts Management Program at the College of Charleston. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he also earned a certificate in Criticism and Interpretive Theory. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Choreography from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an alumnus of the Metropolitan Youth Tap Ensemble.
As a performer, Charlie currently works with Doris Duke Artist Rosy Simas Danse and will appear in multiple company works premiering throughout 2026. He also develops his own interdisciplinary performances through Polymath Performance Project, where he explores experimental approaches to tap dance choreography and storytelling.
For Stage Door Arts Academy, the addition represents more than simply offering another class. It reflects the studio’s ongoing investment in exposing students to high-level performing arts education while keeping those opportunities close to home for Mount Pleasant families.

The summer tap schedule includes:
- Tap 2/3 | Wednesdays | 5 PM–6 PM
- Tap 1/2 | Wednesdays | 6 PM–7 PM
