State Sen. Danny Verdin, R-Laurens, has endorsed Rick Shealy, the Republican nominee for South Carolina House District 14, in the Nov. 3 general election.
Verdin has represented Senate District 9, which includes parts of Greenville, Laurens and Union counties, since 2001. A Laurens business owner and the owner of Verdin’s Farm & Garden Center, Verdin previously served as agriculture and natural resources adviser to former Gov. Carroll Campbell.
“Rick Shealy understands what it takes to build something from the ground up, whether it is a business or a farm,” Verdin said. “He has earned the trust of the people of Laurens County by listening first and standing firm on conservative principles. I am proud to support him, and I look forward to working alongside him in Columbia.”
Shealy, an eighth-generation South Carolinian, built a successful business before establishing his farm in Cross Hill, where he has lived and worked for more than 15 years. He farms alongside his son, Steven, a Marine veteran. Shealy won the Republican primary in June and has focused his general election campaign on eliminating the state income tax, protecting Second Amendment rights, enacting term limits, reforming the judiciary and improving roads and infrastructure.
“Sen. Verdin has served this community with integrity for a quarter century, and his support means a great deal to me,” Shealy said. “I am grateful for his confidence.”
Shealy has pledged to donate his full legislative salary to the Upstate Pregnancy Center if elected.
Verdin joins a growing list of Shealy supporters that includes former District 14 Rep. Stewart Jones; state Rep. Mark Willis of House District 16; David Stumbo, solicitor for South Carolina’s 8th Judicial Circuit and Republican nominee for attorney general; Laurens County Council Chairman Jeff Carroll; Laurens County Council Vice Chairman Matthew Brownlee; and the Greenwood Association of Realtors.
