Statement from LCSD 55 Superintendent

February 22, 2022

Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) Superintendent Dr. Ameca Thomas has issued a public statement today, February 22, 2022, as follows:

“On February 22, a relative of a student contacted Laurens District 55 High School in reference to the student possibly having a firearm on school property.  The student was immediately located in class by the school resource officer and the loaded firearm was located in a bookbag and secured.  The student was secured and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).  Everyone at the school is safe and no one was injured. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office is investigating further.

Parents, students, and community, please understand the seriousness, danger, and ramifications of having firearms and any other type of weapon on school property and in school buildings.  We must all work together to stop this from happening again.  Please, I beseech each of you to be a responsible member of our school district and community and let’s not have another incident like this in Laurens 55.  We are a strong community and we must all stand together to ensure that our students and staff are safe.  We are so much more than the image we portray when this type of situation arises.  Let’s support each other, care for each other, and move forward together focused on providing safe school environments. Let’s strive each day to live in harmony with one another.

We take the safety of our students and staff very seriously. I implore parents to check their student’s backpack and have real-talk conversations with them about making wise decisions.  Anyone who needs assistance in how to have these conversations is encouraged to reach out to their child’s principal, guidance counselor, or a member of the district office staff.  Resources and assistance are available to help.

We will continue to partner with local law enforcement agencies on gun safety and ways to enhance our safety protocols in district facilities.”
