Stephen L. Jones, D.H.A., Joins SCRA as Vice President, Health Sciences

CHARLESTON, SC – MARCH 23, 2009 – SCRA announced today the appointment of Stephen L. Jones, D.H.A., as Vice President, Health Sciences.

New to SCRA, Jones most recently served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for health affairs in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Health Affairs office, which provides operational medicine, training, education, research and force health protection support across the full range of U.S. military operations. Jones’ management responsibilities included strategic planning, congressional relations, communications and coordination between DoD and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Recently, he also managed DoD advancement of electronic information-sharing with the VA.

“We are excited to have Dr. Jones join our team,” said Bill Mahoney, SCRA CEO. “He brings a wealth of knowledge in health sciences and will be a great addition to SCRA.”

Prior to his DoD service, Jones’ professional background includes 19 years at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he served as Director of Federal Relations and Economic Development in the MUSC President’s office. At MUSC, he also served as Chief of Staff and Director for Federal and External Relations. Prior to his work at MUSC, Jones was Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Energy and also worked with the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, DC. Earlier in his career, Jones served in Washington, DC, under South Carolina Senator J. Strom Thurmond and was Executive Director of the Greenville County (SC) Commission for Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

 In his new role as SCRA Vice President of Health Sciences, his responsibilities will include growing the SCRA Health Sciences business and developing new opportunities, particularly in the military health and wellness arenas. 

 Jones served in the U.S. Army in Military Intelligence. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Clemson University and a Master of Social Work degree from The University of South Carolina. He holds a Doctorate degree in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina.
