Summerville Medical Center welcomes Dr. John Carlile as Medical Director of Hospitalist and Intensivist Services

CHARLESTON, SC –  John R. Carlile, M.D., has joined Summerville Medical Center as the Medical Director of Hospitalist and Intensivist Services, bringing more than 35 years of pediatric critical care experience to the role. Dr. Carlile is board certified in pediatrics,pediatric critical care and pediatric pulmonary medicine.

An intensivist is a medical doctor with special training and experience in treating critically ill patients. Hospitalists and intensivists specialize in the care of patients who have been admitted to the hospital and are available to the pediatric intensive care unit around-the-clock.

Dr. Carlile comes to Summerville Medical Center from Cox Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. He earned his Medical Doctorate and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kan. He attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, La., where he also completed his Fellowship.

“My job is to provide the best care to the youngest and weakest members of our society,” said Dr. Carlile. “I’m proud to be able to offer what I’ve learned over more than a quarter century as an intensive care physician. I enjoy and marvel at how quickly children can cope with and improve from illness. As a career, it was a natural fit for my personality and a choice I’ve never regretted.”

Dr. Carlile is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and member of the American Thoracic Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has three grown children, Katie, Ryne and Matthew, and resides with his wife Tracy in Summerville.
