Summerville Orchestra announces 2022-23 Subscription Series season

August 22, 2022

Performances to include works by Bizet, Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi, Dvořák and more

The Summerville Orchestra is excited to announce concert dates and repertoire, including an impressive lineup of guest soloists, for its 2022-23 Ameriprise Financial Subscription Series, titled “Past. Present. Future.” The orchestra will feature world-class soloists for several of the five concerts, including Philip Smith, former principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic; Cassie Pilgrim, principal oboist of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; and Charleston’s own Antonio Martí, principal trumpet of the Charleston Symphony.

Music Director Wojciech Milewski has a gift for selecting pieces that touch a range of emotions – from poignant to playful, from the Old World to the New World, from the silver screen to Broadway. Concerts will include works by some of history’s greats – Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi and the iconic Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” by Antonín Dvořák – along with modern works, including suites from “Ratatouille” and “The Godfather,” and selections from “Man of Steel.”

The work of contemporary composer Chris Pilsner, whose “Light in the Ocean” was a resounding audience and musician favorite from last season, will showcase the last work he composed for his students in 2019 called “Snow Falling in Autumn,” a beautiful pastoral tribute that expresses his love for the students in his classroom. Appropriately, students from local high schools will be among the players on the stage, in a collaboration with Dorchester District 2 schools. This second season concert will also feature the winner of the S.O.’s concerto competition.

“I can’t express how excited I am to embark on this new season,” notes Milewski. “The orchestra has grown to its largest-ever size, and we are continuing an exciting trend of programming that features some of the most amazing masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire alongside some modern and fun pieces for all. To top it all off, we are honored to have some world-class out-of-town soloists joining us. I just can’t wait to share this with all of you! I can’t wait to see you at the Summers Corner PAC!”

All subscription concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. with a preconcert talk with performances starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Summers Corner Performing Arts Center, 318 Gnarly Oak Lane, Summerville. Season tickets are $80 for the five concerts ($6 for under 18) and will go on sale July 1 for anyone who held a ticket to one or more of the 2021-22 Subscription Series concerts. Ticket sales open to the general public on July 15. Single tickets are $22 per concert ($2 per concert for under 18), and single ticket sales open on Sept. 15.

The Summerville Orchestra seeks to share its love of music by engaging and enriching the community through the orchestral art form. The 75-member orchestra performs a subscription series of five concerts at the Summers Corner Performing Arts Center, along with free concerts and events throughout the greater Summerville area. Auditions are held at select times throughout the year, including on Aug. 20 this year.
