TD Charitable Foundation to Award $2.5 Million in Grants to Non-Profits Focusing on Transitional Housing and Homeless Shelter Projects

Annual “Housing for Everyone” competition now acceptingapplications for twenty-five $100,000 affordable housing grants toorganizations from Maine to Florida

CHERRY HILL, NJ and PORTLAND, Maine – July 2, 2012 – The TDCharitable Foundation, funded by TD Bank, America’s Most ConvenientBank®, announced it will award $2.5 million in grants in 2012 to supporttransitional housing and homeless shelter projects and initiativesthrough its seventh annual “Housing for Everyone” grant competition.

The “Housing for Everyone” grant competition is the TD CharitableFoundation’s signature program to bolster affordable housing efforts incommunities served by TD Bank. The competition invites local non-profitorganizations from Maine to Florida to submit proposals in which theorganizations outline their plans to address the most acute affordablehousing needs in their communities. 
Twenty-five organizations throughout TD Bank’s footprint from Maine toFlorida will be awarded a $100,000 grant for a total grant donation of$2.5 million.
 
“Homelessness is a housing crisis that affects millions of people everyday,” said Elizabeth K. Warn, President of the TD Charitable Foundation.“For the working poor, people with disabilities or addictions, or thosewho simply cannot afford a viable place to live, shelters andtransitional housing provide safe harbor and hope for the future. Welook forward to awarding these grants to local non-profit organizationsand seeing the meaningful contributions they make in the communitieswhere TD Bank customers and employees live and work.”
 
This year’s “Housing for Everyone” theme is Transitional Housing andHomeless Shelters, focusing on projects that will expand theavailability of and/or access to transitional housing and/or homelessshelters.
 
Applications for funding must focus on:

  • Homeless Shelters: which are facilities that provide temporaryhousing and may provide a variety of other services including but notlimited to a soup kitchen, substance abuse counselors, job training,etc.
  • Transitional Housing: which is intended to provide the supportneeded for temporary occupants to move into long-term housing and isusually offered as part of a broader spectrum of services or programsthat may provide but is not limited to counseling, job training,childcare, skills training and health care assistance.

 
Organizations that wish to enter the 2012 “Housing for Everyone” grantcompetition must have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status; must develop ormaintain affordable housing, or provide housing-related programs andservices to low-to-moderate-income individuals or families; and servethe communities where TD Bank does business. Applicant organizationsmust also demonstrate fiscal responsibility and the impact they havemade on affordable housing efforts in their communities.
 
Proposals will only be accepted online at www.TDBank.com (click on OurCommunity) and must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2012.Winners will be notified in mid- November 2012.
 
For the past six years, the TD Charitable Foundation has invested nearly$9.7 million in the “Housing for Everyone” competition to help createor maintain more than 8,300 affordable housing units.
