Ten at the Top to hold workshop focused on food access for seniors

As part of an ongoing series addressing issues facing seniors in the Upstate, Ten at the Top (TATT) will be hosting a workshop focused on food access for seniors on Thursday, April 25, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The session, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Park 37 Community Building located at 250 Executive Center Drive in Greenville.
With the number of Upstate residents over the age of 65 projected to rise from roughly 12 percent of the total population in 2010 to more than 25 percent by 2030, the TATT Senior Issues Committee is focused on educating and raising awareness amongst community stakeholders around important issues facing our seniors today and into the future.
According to the South Carolina Council on Aging, 20 percent of South Carolinians over the age of 60 are food insecure, so the barriers that seniors face in accessing nutritious food need to be identified and removed. The workshop panelists will cover a range of topics relating to this issue.
The panel will be moderated by Catriona Carlisle, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Greenville. Panelists include Amy Bell, Manager, Emergency Food Pantry Manager for Harvest Hope Greenville; Bates McKinny, Congregate Dining Site Manager, Spartanburg Recreation; Laurie Ashley, Executive Director, Meals on Wheels Anderson; Yvonne Harper, Director, Fifty Upstate; and Kathy Hendricks-Dublin, CEO, Piedmont Agency on Aging.
This is the second of four senior issue workshops to be hosted by TATT in 2019. The workshop series is sponsored by Upstate Homecare Solutions and the Better Business Bureau of the Upstate.
Vee Daniel, president of the Better Business Bureau of the Upstate, hopes to encourage wide participation in this event, saying, “Cost is a common barrier to quality food for many seniors, while food access is a major barrier. Come hear from the expert panelist as they take the stage and share their senior access experiences and wisdom. Most importantly, take this opportunity to attend, get involved, and contribute your thoughts and feedback on how we can work together to enrich the lives of our seniors throughout the Upstate.”
