The American Red Cross and Suburban Propane Encourage You to Fuel Your Community This June by Donating Blood

June 3, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC — The American Red Cross and Suburban Propane are teaming up once again to help ensure the community blood supply remains strong, by encouraging donors to schedule a generous blood donation this June.

The month-long “Fuel Your Community” campaign aims to raise awareness among Suburban Propane employees, customers, and the population as a whole about the need for blood, which is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals.

Throughout June, Suburban Propane volunteers will also assist with 38 blood drives in the Northeastern United States, reminding everyone that the need for blood never takes a vacation.

“Cancer patients, those fighting blood diseases, and accident victims depend on donors to ensure that our blood supply remains stable as summer donations decline,” said Ryan Corcoran, community chief executive officer for the South Carolina Blood Services Region. “The Red Cross and Suburban Propane encourage people to roll up your sleeve to donate blood and bring hope to their communities.”

Summer travel and activities often conflicts with donation appointments for regularly scheduled donors.  In fact, during the months of June, July and August, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than is needed.  Blood cannot be manufactured.  The only source is a generous volunteer.

“The Fuel Your Community Campaign gives Suburban Propane a chance to give back and help save lives during the summer months when blood donations typically drop.  Dozens of our employees will help promote, recruit, and donate at blood drives from Maine to South Carolina,” said Mark Wienberg, Suburban Propane Chief Operating Officer. “The need for blood is constant.  Our employees are very proud to participate in this on-going partnership with the American Red Cross.”

Choose your day to make a difference through a generous blood donation so patients and hospitals will be better assured to have this lifesaving product readily available to them all summer.  All presenting donors during the month of June will be eligible to win a $200 gift card courtesy of Suburban Propane.
