“The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina” exhibit at Georgetown Library in June & July
May 20, 2026Free Public Exhibit Is Part of “A Glorious Cause” 250th Celebration
During June and July 2026, The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina, a traveling exhibit from the South Carolina State Museum, is on display at the Georgetown Library (405 Cleland Street, Georgetown, SC 29440) by the Circulation Desk during regular operating hours (Monday-Friday: 9:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m. / Saturday: 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) as part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative by the Georgetown County Library.”
South Carolina played a significant role during the American Revolution, where over 200 engagements (battles and skirmishes) took place, more than any other colony during the war. This exhibit highlights major battles that took place in South Carolina, including the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, the Cherokee Attack, and the Battle of Cowpens, as well as the role that African Americans and women played in the war. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

“A Glorious Cause” is made possible by a $39,300 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL). This federal funding will cover 66 percent of the total costs of the project, while $22,100 (or 34 percent) of the total costs will be financed by non-government sources.
The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina exhibit will complement a series of public educational programs at each of the Georgetown County Library’s 5 facilities through June 2026. “A Glorious Cause” programs illustrate the Palmetto State’s exceptional role in securing American independence while exploring the colonial society that shaped the rising nation’s thinkers and fighters, elucidating not only significant historical figures and events of the American Revolution, but also the rich intellectual and social life of the era, including the art, music, dance, and cuisine that defined the spirit of the new nation.
In connection with ongoing 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States, South Carolina, and Georgetown County, “A Glorious Cause” programs feature experts from far and near who expand our understanding of the Revolution and South Carolina’s central contributions. All programs are free and open to the public. Presentations will be filmed and made available afterward for national audiences on our popular Georgetown County Library YouTube channel. In addition to IMLS and SCSL, “A Glorious Cause” has enthusiastic support from community partners, including Coastal Carolina University’s HTC Honors College, Georgetown 250, the Georgetown County Museum, Georgetown County Library’s Friends groups, South Carolina 250, the South Carolina Historical Society, the South Carolina Maritime Museum, and the South Carolina State Museum.
