The City’s 2019 Midlands Area Treasured Trees Program will celebrate and distribute certificates or awards to owners/caretakers of the trees that were selected for the program. The Treasured Trees Program seeks to document and preserve trees that have significant value to the greater community and promote the awareness, benefit and value of trees to the community. This year’s ceremony will be held under a massive live oak tree on campus that will be recognized in this year’s Treasure Tree Class. This is an annual tradition in which the Forestry Division celebrates the importance of the urban canopy and the special trees that lie within it. Other organizations that will be involved in the ceremony include Tree and Appearance Commission, Columbia Garden Club, Columbia Green, and the City of Columbia Forestry and Beautification Division.

Trees nominated for Treasured Trees Awards must meet at least one of the following criteria: Aesthetic or sentimental value, Superior size or scarcity of species, Association with historical events, Environmental benefits and value, Just being a great tree from which to swing or climb!

Trees can be located on public or private property in the Greater Columbia Metropolitan Area and can be nominated by anyone. Groves of trees are eligible, too!
