The COMET celebrates 125 years of Mobility in the Midlands

April 21, 2017

The COMET invites you to join us on May 2, 2017 at 10am at the Transit Center to celebrate its 125th year of transit in the midlands.

The COMET story began in 1892 when streetcars ruled the city and when there were no automobiles in sight.  Over the years, transit has proved to be pivotal to the vitality of a city.  We will have a year-long celebration to appreciate our customers and to educate the community about the benefits and the accessibility of transit.  Throughout the year we will have events reflecting the following themes:

Transit and the Community

Transit is essential to any community.  It is a need for people to get to jobs, doctor appointments, grocery stores, etc.  We will show appreciation of our community by providing a health awareness day at our transit center.  This day will be filled with food and health check-ups! We believe in healthy families and a healthy community.

Transit and the Experience

When you experience transit, you experience your city.  Citizens will get the chance to experience transit and to learn more about what it has to offer in the day to day lives of residents.  Transit is the primary resource that links people to resources that assist them with work, home, school, or play.  We aim to build transit advocates to engage with riders and non-riders and encourage them to incorporate mass transit in their commute even if it is just to the Riverbanks Zoo for family fun!

Transit and Expansion

The COMET will be retiring the all of the Blue Bird buses and replacing them with New Flyer buses.  We will be holding press conference and a procession on Sumter St. to the Transit Center to see the buses on the road one last time and to introduce the new buses to the community.  The procession will be led by a college band.

Transit and Fun

All aboard the Transit Express!  We can have fun educating the community about transit and its benefits.   This celebration will include a visit from Santa and gingerbread bus contest.  The community will be able to celebrate the holidays with The COMET.
