The Comet partners with the City of Columbia’s Complete Count Committee to increase awareness about the importance of being counted

The COMET announced a new partnership with the City of Columbia’s Complete Count Committee to encourage City residents to participate in the Census since every person counts.
Participation in the 2020 Census is paramount to the future success of South Carolina. Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, each decade our nation gets the opportunity to count its population. The population totals from the Census determine the future of many aspects of our daily lives such as state funding, drawing of legislative districts and forecasting future transportation needs for all segments of the population. In the case of The COMET, every person counted can help The COMET obtain additional funding to support its operational and capital needs in Richland and Lexington Counties.
In April of 2019, the City of Columbia assembled the Complete Count Committee (CCC), a team of community members working to ensure that there is a complete and accurate count of all its residents in the 2020 U.S. Census. Together they work to raise awareness and motivate residents to respond to the 2020 Census. Success of the Census depends on community involvement at every level. The COMET’s Executive Director/CEO, John Andoh is one of the participants on this committee.
Given the importance of the upcoming Census and the CCC’s quest of ensuring that everyone is counted and has access to trusted information, The COMET proud to help increase awareness of Census counting to the residents of Columbia. Later on, this month, The COMET riders will begin to see Census information located on all COMET buses and at COMET Central in downtown Columbia. Ensuring those that are riding public transit have access to Census information is important as the CCC works hard to making sure every resident in Columbia is counted. As we get closer to April 1, 2020, Census Day, there will be more opportunities for engagement with The COMET riders.

About The COMET
The COMET is a service of the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority and provides countywide public transit services on 34 fixed routes, four ReFlex services, vanpool service has subsidy programs with Uber and Lyft and DART ADA complementary paratransit service and 10 bikeshare stations throughout Richland and eastern Lexington Counties. The COMET transports approximately 2.8 million passenger trips a year on a fleet of 81 buses and vans. The 2020 Census provides an opportunity for everyone to be counted. Tribal, state, and local governments; community based organizations; faith-based groups; schools; businesses; the media; and others play a key role in developing partners to educate and motivate residents to participate in the 2020 Census. The Complete Count Committees (CCC) program is key to creating awareness in communities all across the country.
