The Daily Gamecock named regional Newspaper of the Year

COLUMBIA, SC – November 3, 2008 – The University of South Carolina’s student newspaper, The Daily Gamecock, received the Southern University Newspaper of the Year award for overall excellence in advertising design at the 28th annual Southern University Newspapers (SUN) advertising conference held Oct. 9 – 10 in Columbia.

The Daily Gamecock also received 11 design awards, which included first-place recognition in “Best Advertising Campaign or Series,” “Best Marketing Package,” “Best Individual Retail Ad,” “Best Theme Page,” “Best Classified Page” and “Best Rate Card”; second place for “Best House Ad,” “Best Event or Promotion,” “Best Use of Color” and “Best Online Ad.” Student sales representative Carly Gallagher, a junior from Boca Raton, Fla., won the live sales presentation competition held at the conference. 

The conference was hosted by The State newspaper. 

Each fall, the conference is held to provide student newspaper advertising staffs two days of intense training and networking. 

Southern University Newspapers was established in 1979 to provide advertising training to Southern college newspapers’ students and professionals. Membership is open to four-year collegiate newspapers that are non-profit organizations or university entities and managed by a full-time professional staff or faculty member.

The Daily Gamecock is the editorially independent student newspaper of the University of South Carolina and has been publishing since 1908.The newspaper publishes 12,000 copies daily, Monday through Friday, during the fall and spring semesters and Wednesdays during the summer.
