The Fine Arts Center to Showcase a World-Renowned Jazz Guitarist

The Fine Arts Center, South Carolina’s first secondary school for gifted students in the literary, visual and performing arts, is pleased to welcome Richard Smith on November 14th.

The Fine Arts Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and, as part of that celebration, a number of special performances have been scheduled showcasing the outstanding talents of the students, the faculty and the community.

The Richard Smith Jazz Concert will take place on Friday, November 14th, at 7:00 pm in the Black Box Theatre at the Center, 102 Pine Knoll Drive. Tickets will be available at the door, $15 for adults, $7 for students, $5 for Fine Arts Center students.

Richard Smith’s thirteen solo recordings have established him as a veteran of the contemporary music world. Some of his recent accomplishments include nominations such as:

    • Best Contemporary Jazz Guitar Album
    • Record of the Year
    • Best New Artist

Smith’s most recent recording, “Tangos,” 2014, was in the top 10 of the indie and smooth jazz charts for over five months.

Smith is also full professor and former chair of the Studio/Jazz Guitar department at the renowned Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In Europe, Smith has performed master classes at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, London, The London College of Contemporary Music, The Rotterdam Conservatorium, The Royal Academy of Music, Denmark, Music Academy 2000, Bologna, The Universtate d’Rome, The ESC Guitar Seminar, Siracusa and many more.

The Fine Arts Center (FAC)

Established in 1974, the Fine Arts Center (FAC) is South Carolina’s first secondary school for gifted students in the literary, visual and performing arts. As an application based school of 400 students, FAC operates within the Greenville County’s public school system. Students are able to study architecture, creative writing, dance, filmmaking, music, theatre or the visual arts with a faculty of practicing artists. FAC’s 2013-2014 graduating class of 88 students earned over 10.8 million dollars in scholarships and enrolled in over 40 different colleges and universities.
