The Hearth Center for Eating Disorders Hosts Free Screening of America the Beautiful 3

September 3, 2014

Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Senate’s End (320 Senate St.) ~

The Hearth Center for Eating Disorders at the Carolina Children’s Home, a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient eating disorder treatment center, will sponsor the South Carolina screening of filmmaker Darryl Roberts’ America the Beautiful 3. This screening, which is free and open to the public, will take place Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Senate’s End (320 Senate St.) in Columbia.

America the Beautiful documented the rise and fall of a 12-year-old professional model in New York and Los Angeles. In his second film, America the Beautiful 2, Roberts explored America’s obsession with beauty and diets. In this third and final installment, Roberts draws back the curtain on the sexualizing of young girls in the media and society.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. Timothy Brewerton, the Hearth’s medical director, the filmmaker Darryl Roberts and Amy Gerberry, the clinical director at the Hearth.

“I am pleased that the Hearth Center for Eating Disorders at Carolina Children’s Home will be sponsoring a screening of ATB3,” said Dr. Brewerton. “Many in the eating disorders community have spoken for years about the powerful negative influences that sociocultural factors play in the development of eating disorders, and this film just further underscores how we all need to be advocates against these destructive forces that contribute to the predisposition, precipitation and perpetuation of eating disorders.”

6:30 – 8 p.m.: America the Beautiful 3 screening

8 – 9 p.m.: Q & A and discussion

“Though The Hearth Center for Eating Disorders has only been open a relatively short time, we’ve already helped many individuals suffering with eating disorders in our state and beyond,” said John Kessler, executive director of The Hearth. “We’re the only comprehensive residential treatment facility in South Carolina, and we’ve estimated that there are over 4,000 individuals with eating disorders. We hope that events like the screening of America the Beautiful 3 will bring awareness to the statewide and national problem of eating disorders.”
