The Humane Society Awarded ASPCA Grant

May 28, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – May 28, 2013 – The Humane Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Columbia, which strives to end animal overpopulation by offering low-cost spay and neuter surgeries and seeks to investigate and prevent animal abuse, has been awarded a $4,000 grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

The funds will allow the Humane Society to provide additional training for nine seized horses that are currently available for adoption and remain in the Humane Society’s care from a seizure five years ago. In 2008, the Humane Society’s cruelty investigative efforts led to the seizure of over 45 horses from members of a Richland County family who were ultimately charged with felony and misdemeanor animal abuse counts after the horses were removed from farms in Richland County.

The nine horses that still remain in the Humane Society’s care will receive additional training to make them more readily adoptable for qualified potential owners with the ASPCA funds.

“We’re grateful to the ASPCA for their support of these horses who will benefit from training,” said Wayne Brennessel, executive director of The Humane Society. “We’ve been fortunate that so many of the horses involved in that case have found loving owners who have devoted themselves to caring for these animals. These additional funds will help us get the remaining horses ready for adoption.”
