The Humane Society offers free spay/neuter surgeries in September for Lexington County communities

August 28, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – The Humane Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which strives to end animal overpopulation by offering low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, will offer free spay and neuter surgeries in five Lexington County communities in the month of September, made possible by funding from The Animal Mission.

The Humane Society will use its Fido Fixer mobile clinic for surgeries. Residents of the Lexington County communities where free surgeries are offered will be asked for proof of ZIP code before surgery.

The Fido Fixer will be in the following communities on these specific dates:
• Swansea: Thursday, Sept. 3: Swansea Milling Company (200 S. Spring St.)
• Leesville: Thursday, Sept. 10: Lazy Creek Discount Pet Foods and Supplies (351 E. Church St.)
• Pelion: Thursday, Sept. 17: Shumpert’s IGA (861 Pine St.)
• Gaston: Tuesday, Sept. 22: Gaston Town Hall (131 N. Carlisle St.)
• Gilbert: Thursday, Sept. 24: Price’s Country Store (540 Peach Festival Rd.)

“We know that the only way to really positively impact pet overpopulation in the Midlands and to decrease intakes at our area animal shelters is to spay or neuter our pets,” said Wayne Brennessel, executive director of The Humane Society. “Though we offer the lowest cost spay and neuter surgeries in our area year round, we’re thankful to The Animal Mission for providing funds to offer free spay and neuter surgeries in Lexington County for cats and dogs, which fill our public shelters.”

The Animal Mission, which raises funds to end dog and cat overpopulation and offers vouchers for free spay/neuter surgeries, makes this round of free spay/neuter surgeries possible. The organization also supports the City of Columbia Animal Shelter.

The Humane Society, which has a veterinarian on staff, is pleased to offer free spay surgeries, and the following rules apply:
• Limit two surgeries per household
• Surgeries must be scheduled in advance
• Pet owners must present vaccination records before surgery (if pets aren’t current on vaccinations, the Humane Society can provide necessary vaccinations)
• Pets must be at least three months of age and under four years of age.
• Dogs must weigh at least five pounds and no more than 40 pounds
• Cats must weigh at least three pounds
• Please visit www.humanesc.org to review Humane Society spay/neuter policies and pre-surgical instructions
