The Mah Jongg Connection: Building community one tile at a time

June 3, 2026

The Mah Jongg Connection is bringing a dedicated space for Mah Jongg to Pawleys Island, where players can learn, play, and gather around a shared love of the game. Founded by Michelle Hill Burton and Michele Zucker, the studio grows out of more than 20 years of combined experience and a desire to create a stylish, approachable place for beginners and seasoned players alike.

Burton and Zucker plan to offer personal instruction, thoughtfully designed play opportunities, and quality accessories in a setting that feels both polished and inviting.

The name The Mah Jongg Connection speaks to the game’s enduring social appeal. Around the table, players share strategy, conversation, and the pleasure of spending time together.

That concept is now taking shape in a dedicated studio at The Litchfield Exchange. With renovations underway, the new Pawleys Island space is being designed for lessons, open play, tournaments, marathons, and special events.

Mah Jongg itself has a rich history. The game originated in China in the 19th century, likely developing in the coastal regions around Shanghai and Ningbo before spreading internationally in the early 20th century. Over time, it evolved into several distinct styles, including the American version that became especially popular in the United States and remains a beloved social tradition today.

Work is underway to transform the new Mah Jonng studio in Pawleys Island.

In recent years, Mah Jongg has experienced a remarkable resurgence. Eventbrite reported a 179% increase in Mah Jongg events nationwide between 2023 and 2024, while the National Mah Jongg League now reports more than 350,000 members. That growth reflects a broader appetite for meaningful, in-person experiences that combine strategy, tradition, and social connection—qualities that make the game especially appealing across generations.

Whether someone is learning for the first time, joining an afternoon of open play, or looking for tournament competition, The Mah Jongg Connection aims to become a lively destination for Mah Jongg in the Lowcountry. More information is available at their website: themahjonggconnection.com.
