The Newberry Opera House Presents: Classic Rock and Roll Bill Haley and His Comets At the Newberry Opera House

January 5, 2015

NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry Opera House will host Bill Haley & His Comets on Friday night, January 16th. It is a show sure to heat up a cold winter’s evening. The American rock and roll band was founded in 1952 and continued until Haley’s death in 1981, and now original and new member’s tour with the original charts, doing the songs which changed the American musical landscape. The band is now led by original bass and trumpet player, Al Rappa.

Band Leader Bill Haley had previously been a country music performer; after recording a country and western-styled version of “Rocket 88”, a rhythm and blues song, he changed musical direction to a new sound which came to be called rock and roll.

With tunes like “Rock the Joint”, “Rock Around the Clock”, and “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” the Comets continue to have airplay to this day.

Although several members of the Comets became famous, Bill Haley remained the star. With his spit curl and the band’s matching plaid dinner jackets and energetic stage behavior, many fans consider them to be as revolutionary in their time as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones were a decade later.

Tickets are still available for this really fun show. Call the Newberry Opera House Box Office at 803-276-6264 or visit online at www.newberryoperahouse.com.
