The Nickelodeon Theatre Introduces “National Treasures,” First Curated Series
May 29, 2013COLUMBIA, SC – May 29, 201# – “National Treasures: A Retrospective of American Classics,” the Nickelodeon Theatre’s first curated series, will begin playing at the Nickelodeon Theatre for 12 consecutive weekends and Mondays for Summer 2013, from June 1 – August 17.
Janell Rohan, who holds a master’s degree in film studies from UCLA, and assisted in the selection of films for the 2013 Indie Grits Festival, curated the series. National Treasures presents a well-rounded collection of films that are part of American pop culture made from 1940-1986.
“I thought about why these particular films continue to captivate American movie-goers of all generations,” said Rohan, in her curator’s notes for the series. “Which characteristics allow them to remain relevant and engraved in our collective conscience? How do our various ages, socio-economic statuses, geographic origins, and cultural heritages change the way we experience these films? Though the films span nearly 60 years and various genres, what these movies all share is their success at capturing the zeitgeist of their period and are each inextricably woven into the fabric of American popular culture.”
