The Salvation Army Receives $200,000 from United Way of the Midlands to Support Financial Stability

September 30, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – The Salvation Army of the Midlands has received a $200,000 grant from United Way of the Midlands to support financial stability and reduce homelessness in the Midlands.

Throughout 2014-2015, the grant will be used to help homeless families with children attending Richland One, Richland Two and Lexington-Richland 5 School Districts establish a permanent residence, reunite the homeless with family members willing to support them, and provide emergency shelter for families with children when no local shelter beds are available.

“With financial support from United Way of the Midlands, The Salvation Army will be able to expand our services and make a larger impact in the community,” said Major Roger Coulson, Regional Coordinator/Corps Officer of The Salvation Army. “The partnership that has been established between The Salvation Army and United Way of the Midlands is truly a benefit to everyone in the Midlands and we look forward to working closely with United Way throughout the grant period to provide these services.”

This is the fourth year that United Way of the Midlands has supported this program, and last year alone, 201 homeless families (618 individuals) were place into permanent housing or assisted with housing intervention, thanks in large part to this important contribution.

United Way of the Midlands (UWM) has awarded a total of $1,320,000 in grant funding to support financial stability services. The awards will support a range of strategies including homelessness prevention programs, street outreach, and the creation of affordable housing. The financial stability awards are part of a $4,000,000 total investment that also addresses health care and education programs.

“Only by bringing together the organizations with resources, expertise and passion for solving homelessness will we accomplish our goals,” said Mac Bennett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “We are fortunate to have strong partners, like The Salvation Army, to address these challenges in our community.”
