The SCEA Recommends Bakari Sellers for Lt. Governor

September 3, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Education Association (The SCEA) announced today that it is recommending State Rep. Bakari T. Sellers in the race for South Carolina Lieutenant Governor.

“An outstanding product of South Carolina public schools, Rep. Sellers has established a strong record of support for public education,” said Bernadette R. Hampton, President of The SCEA. “He grew up in rural Bamberg County and went on to graduate from Morehouse College and the University of South Carolina School of Law. His commitment to seniors is significant because of the critical role seniors play in the lives of young people — as mentors, family historians, role models, and sometimes even as surrogate parents to their own grandchildren. Rep. Sellers’ plan to revamp the state Office on Aging will go a long way toward improving the lives of senior citizens and the impressionable young people who receive their guidance.”

The son of civil rights leader Dr. Cleveland Sellers and Gwendolyn Sellers, Rep. Sellers has served in the Legislature since 2006, when, at age 22, his election made him the youngest member of the House of Representatives from District 90. He is an attorney with the Strom Law Firm in Columbia, serves as a member of the South Carolina Black Caucus, and attends St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.

“We are confident that, in his role as Lieutenant Governor, Rep. Sellers will continue to demonstrate allegiance to our shared values, which include appropriate funding to sustain quality public schools in South Carolina,” Hampton added.
