The Surgery Center at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery earns number one spot in Newsweek’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers

December 9, 2020

The Surgery Center at Midlands Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery has been recognized as the number one ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in South Carolina by Newsweek.

The 2021 Newsweek survey identified the 400 best ASCs in 25 states with the most facilities. The rankings included Ambulatory Surgery Centers operating exclusively for the purpose of providing surgical services to patients not requiring hospitalization and in which the expected duration of services would not exceed 24 hours following an admission.

The Newsweek ranking took into account ASC quality data, centers’ handling of the COVID-19 crisis, and surveys of ASC nurses, therapists, physicians, surgeons and administrators. The number of ASCs awarded varied by state with South Carolina having ten.

Working with data research firm Statista, Newsweek analyzed ambulatory surgical center performance data. As part of the research, they conducted a survey of experts, asking nurses, therapists, physicians and surgeons, and administrators in ASCs for the best surgery centers in their state or a state they’re familiar with. They also invited them to assess how well the ASC in question has handled the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis.

William Prentice, CEO of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, commented on the ranking to Becker’s ASC Review:
“ASCA is pleased that Newsweek is recognizing that ambulatory surgery centers provide exemplary care to patients across the country because that has been true for a very long time. Readers should also know that there are several nationally recognized accrediting bodies that independently certify the quality of care provided by thousands of ambulatory surgery centers. For this reason, we strongly recommend that patients considering surgery in an ASC look at the publicly available quality data that Medicare makes available online, as well as the accreditations awarded to the surgery center.”

Janet Carlson, Chief Executive Officer of The Surgery Center at Midlands Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery surgery commented:
“This recognition by Newsweek is of particular significance to our organization as it reflects the opinions and observations of our peers in the profession. Providing our community with the highest care available is our primary objective, and our entire organization is fully committed to providing the best care and patient experience possible. Being selected as the best in South Carolina reinforces our unrelenting pursuit of excellence and patient well-being”.
