Hundreds of Charleston-area mail carriers will pick up non-perishable food during their daily routes from household mailboxes on Saturday. Households should leave non-perishable food (no glass, please) in or near their mailbox for pickup.
The food collected on Saturday will be distributed back into the community for those who face food insecurity.
Food insecurity rates in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina served by the Lowcountry Food Bank remain high at 12%, which equates to more than 184,000 of our neighbors, of whom 50,000 are children.
Our community can make an impact any time of the year with a food or fund drive, an online donation, or a virtual food drive.
Some of the most-needed non-perishable food items needed are canned meat, low-sodium soups and stews, low-sugar cereals, whole grain pasta, and canned low-sugar fruits and canned vegetables.
