Threads of Time: Brookgreen Gardens highlights the art of memory in What Remains: Quilts of Use, Care and Time

October 14, 2026

Art and utility seamlessly collide at Brookgreen Gardens in its upcoming exhibition, What Remains: Quilts of Use, Care and Time. Hosted in the Lowcountry Gallery from October 17, 2026 through February 28, 2027, the exhibit invites visitors to reflect on how everyday textile art records the passage of time, human labor, and domestic history.

The Intersection of Structure and Precision

At first glance, quilts represent traditional craftsmanship built on geometric structures. What Remains explores how makers navigate established structural frameworks—utilizing classic, recognizable patterns like the Double Wedding Ring, Star Blocks, Log Cabin, and Bear Claws—while expressing individual artistry. Through intentional choices in fabric selection, color contrast, and scale, each quilter translates a standard template into a distinct visual statement.

Looking closely at the surface reveals the undeniable presence of the human hand. Minute variations in stitching, subtle shifts in alignment, and calculated adjustments show a dynamic balance between meticulous precision and creative adaptation.

Beauty in the Worn and Mended

Unlike works of fine art designed strictly for distant observation, quilts occupy a rare space: they are created to be used, handled, and lived with. What Remains centers on the story told by these objects over time.

Instead of treating wear, fraying, or historic repairs as flaws, the exhibition frames them as essential chapters of the object’s identity:

  • Traces of Daily Life: Areas worn smooth by decades of handling capture the physical motion and touch of past generations.

  • Care and Preservation: Visible mendings and patches highlight the deliberate effort to preserve warm memories and cherished heirlooms.

  • A Living Record: The physical evolution of each piece transforms it from a static crafted object into a enduring record of time, care, and resilience.

Whether you are a textile enthusiast, a history lover, or simply looking for inspiration in the Lowcountry, What Remains offers a poignant look at how functional craftsmanship retains memory across generations.

Admission is free for Brookgreen members and  included with general garden admission for non-members.
