Three bridges on Bluff Road closed for replacement in Richland County

April 14, 2016

Three bridges on SC 48 (Bluff Road) in Richland County were closed Thursday afternoon, April 14, 2016, by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). SCDOT continues to monitor and inspect flood impacted bridges for latent damages. Safety remains SCDOT’s top priority in continuing to recover from the historic October floods.

During bridge re-inspections, SCDOT utilized certified bridge inspection divers, to further evaluate underwater bridge support foundations and observed evidence of continued scour at each of the three bridges. Scour occurs when swift moving water causes erosion around the bridge supports.

Because the damages are believed to be related to the October floods, the agency will pursue federal assistance in the cost of replacement. Costs and a timetable for replacement will be determined in the coming weeks.

The three bridges closed today on Bluff Road are:

  • 100 ft. structure over Black Swamp;
  • 151 ft. structure over Cedar Creek;
  • 76 ft. structure over Dry Branch.

The detour for local traffic will be Old Bluff Road.

SCDOT remains committed to protecting the motoring public, and continues to take appropriate measures to ensure safety.
