Trident Technical College receives additional funding for Workforce Pathways Scholarship program

August 2, 2016

Trident Technical College’s Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development is offering a new installment of the Workforce Pathways Scholarship that pays for course fees and books for approved STEM and career training continuing education programs.

The scholarship was offered earlier this year with what was thought to be one-time- only funding. Due to the success of the statewide initiative, the S.C. General Assembly made new funds available to the S.C. Technical College System to renew the Workforce Pathways Scholarship program for another term. With $771,000 in funds available for Trident Tech students, the program has the potential to benefit hundreds of local residents who need workforce training to get a job or advance on the job.

The scholarship covers the cost of course fees and textbooks for qualified TTC continuing education courses in the areas of health care, manufacturing, information technology, and professional development. A complete list of eligible courses can be found under Funding Opportunities on TTC’s Continuing Education website at www.tridenttech.edu/ce. Training available through the scholarship program prepares students for jobs in fields including medical coding, emergency medical technology, medical assisting, phlebotomy, web design, computer networking, and advanced manufacturing.

“We are so thankful that this important scholarship program has been renewed so we can again offer this tremendous opportunity for students to train for a new career,” said Bob Walker, vice president for Continuing Education and Economic Development. “Hundreds of students took advantage of the last installment of the Workforce Pathways Scholarship and are now equipped to begin a new career or advance in their current one.”

The new installment of the Workforce Pathways Scholarship is available for courses with a start date from Aug. 15, 2016, through March 15, 2017, or until funds are expended. Scholarship funds are available for use only on qualified TTC continuing education courses within approved programs. Scholarship recipients can take an entire program or classes within a program, but they cannot move between programs.

Scholarship eligibility is not based on financial need or previous academic performance. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in South Carolina, and have a GED or high school diploma or provide college transcripts. Applicants must also provide a negative drug screen within three days of application submittal, though some programs may require more than one drug screen and have additional entrance requirements.

To apply, visit www.tridenttech.edu/ce, click on Funding Opportunities, and review the basic requirements of the Workforce Pathways Scholarship. Prospective students who meet the basic requirements must attend one of the mandatory orientation sessions that are offered every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m. at Trident Tech’s Main Campus in North Charleston in Bldg. 910. A continuing education program manager will guide applicants through the remainder of the application process.
