Trident United Way’s President and CEO Chloe Knight Tonney announces retirement

Trident United Way President & CEO Chloe Knight Tonney has announced her retirement effective September 15, 2022, thus concluding her 35-year career in philanthropy.
“With 17 years of experience at the National Foundation for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Chloe served in the nonprofit sector through five pandemics,” said Board Chair Wendy Kopp. “She was the ideal leader to steer Trident United Way through COVID-19. We are incredibly grateful for her steadfast leadership and commitment to the Tri-County over the last several years.”
Among Tonney’s many achievements to serve the public good during her tenure, highlights include an almost 10% increase in revenues in year one and raising over $500,000 in a single event for COVID-19 funding for our community. Recently, Trident United Way was selected by the United Way Association of SC to steward a federally funded award of $1.25 million –the largest in Trident United Way history – to address housing instability due to the impacts of COVID-19.
“It has been an incredible honor to serve the Tri-County alongside our extremely talented and dedicated board members, staff, partners and volunteers,” Tonney said. “This team has built a strong roadmap for the future. As we refresh our strategic plan, the timing is well-aligned to identify a new leader who will bring Trident United Way into its next era of impact and achievement.”
Bradley R. Davis was unanimously approved by Trident United Way’s Executive Committee to serve as interim president & CEO. Davis will start on Monday, August 22, 2022, and work alongside Tonney for several weeks to ensure a seamless transition.
Davis served 22 years as the Managing Partner at Rick Hendrick BMW/MINI/Volvo in Charleston before retiring in 2018. He began his service to Trident United Way in 1999 as the Auto Dealer Co-Chair with the Trident United Way Annual Campaign. He served as a Campaign Ambassador for many years and advanced his Trident United Way volunteerism by serving as a Leader for each Day of Caring. Additionally, Davis served on the Community Impact Committee for nine years. He was a member of the Nominating Committee in 2021 and served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee from 2018-2022. He was serving on the Finance Committee until he accepted the position as interim president and chief executive officer.
