Two Andy Warhol exhibitions opening at Upcountry History Museum

February 3, 2023

The Upcountry History Museum-Greenville County, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is bringing an exceptional encounter with history, art, and culture to Greenville when two extraordinary exhibitions featuring Pop Art icon Andy Warhol open on Saturday, February 4, 2023.

Though distinctly different, both “Works By Warhol” and “Andy Warhol: Endangered Species” bring the recognizable flair that this influential 20th-century artist introduced as a leading member of the 1960s American Pop Art movement. Warhol’s ability to fuse vibrant colors, varying styles, and vast subject matters produced a body of work which continues to emit ranges of emotion, empathy, and ethos.

Moreover, the Museum is proud to be one of only three museums in the United States selected by the Art Bridges Foundation to host the “Andy Warhol: Endangered Species”* exhibition project. With support from Art Bridges, and exclusive to its stop in Greenville, the unique display of all 10 oversized silkscreen prints in this 1983 series will feature essential accessibility components for the visually impaired, including tactile reproduction images and braille information labels. It will also be bilingual with the information panels translated into Spanish. “Endangered Species” will be on display through April 30, 2023.

“Accessibility and access are keys to ensuring meaningful museum experiences, and the Upcountry History Museum is committed to creating an environment that offers engaging learning opportunities for all,” said Museum CEO Dana L. Thorpe. “In bringing these two Warhol exhibitions to Greenville, the Museum is, again, able to provide a distinctive encounter with history, art, and culture.”

The “Works By Warhol” exhibition, on loan from The Cochran Collection (LaGrange, GA), features 35 iconic masterworks from 1968 through his last series in 1986 and showcases a variety of his work, such as the Myths series, JFK’s assassination, and Neil Armstrong’s moon landing. It will be on display through May 7, 2023.

The Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St., in Greenville, S.C. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 864-467-3100 or visit www.upcountryhistory.org.

*”Andy Warhol: Endangered Species” is organized by Art Bridges with works drawn from the collection of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
