Two CCSD principals in top 10 to win $20,000 Best in Education Award

CHARLESTON, SC – While they will have to wait until October 23, 2015 to know if they won, two CCSD principals are within striking distance of the Escalante-Gradillas Best in Education $20,000 award.
Dr. Timothy Schavel at Malcolm C. Hursey Elementary School and Jacob Perlmutter at Jerry Zucker Middle School of Science were announced today as two of the 2015 top 10 finalists. The award recognizes outstanding teachers and school administrators across the country, while looking to energize the spirit of excellence in education for all educators.
“Principals have a profound impact on the lives of their students, teachers, families, and local community,” said Gerrita Postlewait, CCSD Superintendent. “We are truly proud that two of our own are being recognized for the amazing work they do each and every day.”
Dr. Schavel has been the principal at Hursey Elementary for five years and was nominated in part for how he serves his staff and students with the grace and patience they need to flourish.
“Being nominated for this award and recognized for the hard work and success of the entire Hursey family brings joy to my heart,” said Dr. Schavel. “It is not just about me it’s about the wonderful students, parents, and staff at Hursey. As we say each and every day- ‘We are stronger together.’”
Mr. Perlmutter has been the principal at Zucker Middle for four years and was nominated in part for his incredible work to offer expanded and equitable opportunities to all students in North Charleston.
“It is truly humbling to be called loveable by people you love, and to be called inspirational by people that inspire you every day,” said Mr. Perlmutter. “It’s an honor to be a finalist and it’s an open testament to the work our teachers and students are doing every day at Zucker Middle School.”
