United Way and the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless shine light on local homelessness during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

In observance of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless (MACH), led by United Way of the Midlands, is hosting a series of events Nov. 14 – 18 to create awareness about issues facing the area’s homeless.

In partnership with Community Relations Council, Harvest Hope Food Bank, The PASS Project, Richland Library, Transitions, Washington Street United Methodist Church, and the Women’s Shelter, these events highlight ways the community can work together to ensure that no one goes hungry or without a home in the Midlands.

Events include:

  • “A Place Called Home” Poster Contest

Nov. 14 at Richland Library from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. featuring art by students from Barnwell, Calhoun, Fairfield, Lancaster, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland and York counties.

  • Prayer Breakfast and Mayor’s Proclamation

Nov. 15 at Washington Street United Methodist Church Soup Cellar at 8 a.m.

  • Food Drive to Benefit Harvest Hope

Nov. 16 with donations collected at United Way.

  • Transitions Reconstructing Home Art Show

Nov. 17 at Agape Conference Center at 6 p.m. featuring client art and a silent auction.

  • Women’s Shelter 37th Annual Thanksgiving Souper

Nov. 17 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church & New Spring Church at 5:30 p.m.

  • “A Place Called Home” Poster Contest Winner Announcement

Nov. 18 at Richland Library at 9 a.m.

“At United Way we believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home,” said United Way President and CEO, Mac Bennett. “With homelessness continuing to decline in the Midlands, decreasing by 14 percent over the past two years, we are proud to partner in Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to bring to light this important community issue and the work being done to end homelessness.”
