United Way announces $10.9 million campaign goal for the Midlands

Columbia, SC – United Way of the Midlands today announced a $10.9 million goal for its 2015-2016 campaign.
The announcement was made during United Way Day at the State House where hundreds of community members joined to celebrate the power of community.
During the event, United Way announced it has already raised $4.7 million towards the goal through Pacesetter companies who have already completed workplace giving campaigns.
United Way Day also launched United Way’s two-day service event, with hundreds of volunteers completing projects at United Way partner agencies.
Main Street was renamed “United Way” for the day by the City of Columbia with a City Councilman Sam Davis issuing a proclamation that Sept. 18 is officially United Way Day in the city.
Remarks were provided by former City of Columbia Mayor Bob Coble.
Last year, United Way raised $10.7 million – exceeding the $10.5 million goal – to invest in
community programs focused on education, financial stability and health.
With more than 40,000 community donors, funds raised last year by United Way were used to provide services like free dental care to more than 3,000 people, recruit more than 400 volunteer tutors to work with 568 students for an entire school year and house over 220 homeless individuals since January, with the goal of eliminating chronic homelessness completely by 2016.
