United Way names Ed Mullins 2011 Alyce Kemp DeWitt Award Winner

COLUMBIA, SC – May 10, 2012 – United Way of the Midlands has honored EdMullins of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP as the 2011 AlyceKemp DeWitt award winner. The award recognizes a volunteer whosecreativity and passion have made an extraordinary impact on United Wayof the Midlands.

The Alyce Kemp DeWitt award is United Way’s most prestigious award forlong-term service to the organization and community. In order to beeligible, an Alyce Kemp DeWitt Award winner must have worked with UnitedWay for a minimum of four years and made a measurable impact on theorganization.

Mr. Mullins has spent his career addressing human service issues andcommunity needs both financially and with his time serving on boards,volunteering, or soliciting others into service and giving. Mr. Mullinsis Of Counsel to Nelson Mullins, which has more than 180 donors toUnited Way as well as 58 leadership givers.

“I first got involved in United Way in 1959 when I joined the law firm,”Mr. Mullins said. “Some people choose a specific charity or cause togive to, but with United Way, you can touch so many lives in so manydifferent ways by giving to their organization.”

He is also a former chair and current member of the Tocqueville Society,a group of donors who make an annual gift of $10,000 or more throughUnited Way.

Ed has a major commitment to everything he is involved in,” saidCharlotte Berry, a friend of Mr. Mullins and fellow Tocqueville societymember. “With his persistence and ability to follow through, he hascertainly been a supporter and a great advocate for the community, andspecifically the United Way. His leadership in the Tocqueville Societyis outstanding, and he has taken it to another level. He has shown notonly lawyers in his firm, but in other firms as well, that you can be agood, professional lawyer and have a passion for your community.
