March 7, 2025

Who: Columbia Streams Art public art program, Cottontown Community

What: Two new Urban Canvas tapestries will make their public debut in the 2100 block of Sumter Street during the Cottontown Art Crawl on March 8, 2025 as part of the ongoing Columbia Streams Art public art program. The two new 6’ X 8’ tapestries were individually painted by local artists Michael Cassidy and Stephen Chesley and feature dynamic visualizations of Columbia’s river wildlife, and will be exhibited on the exterior wall facing Jefferson Street at Il Focolare Pizzeria at 2150 Sumter Street.

Additionally, the 15’ X 10’ Urban Canvas tapestry originally unveiled on the side of Todd & Moore Sporting Goods last August, and featuring creative work by ten different local artists, is now on public display on the exterior wall of the NOMA Warehouse building at 2222 Sumter Street.

Stormwater Studios artist Stephen Chesley in collaboration with other Columbia creatives envisioned a series of large-scale, movable tapestries he describes as “anti-murals”, championed the Urban Canvas public art tapestry. Urban Canvas tapestries can be hung and exhibited in citywide public exterior locations to maximize the greatest degree of viewing opportunities for the widest cross section of citizens.
