U.S. Army Captain Dan Eggers remembered with permanent classroom dedication

When Capt. Daniel W. Eggers was killed in Afghanistan, senior Army officials in Kabul made sure that he would be remembered by naming the Kabul compound “Camp Eggers” in honor of the Green Beret. Now that the compound has closed, the plaque commemorating Eggers has been given to The Citadel to use in a classroom that will be dedicated to him.
Eggers was a member of The Citadel Class of 1997. He was a Special Forces detachment commander assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was killed on May 24, 2004, when the vehicle in which he was riding struck an improvised explosive device.
The Citadel’s Army ROTC classroom will be dedicated to Eggers on Sept. 5. Lieutenant Colonel Rebecca Eggers, his widow, and other members of his family will attend, as well the President of The Citadel, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, and members of Eggers graduating class. The event is not open to the public due to space constraints but members of the media are welcome.

The Friends of the Daniel Library 2015 Fall Lecture Series gets underway with an evening with New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Jordan. Jordan will discuss his new release, American Warlords, which is the story of what he calls the greatest “team of rivals” since the days of Lincoln: President Franklin D. Roosevelt, General George C. Marshall, War Secretary Henry Stimson, and Admiral Ernest J. King.
According to Jordan, in a lifetime shaped by politics, President Roosevelt proved himself to be a master manipulator of Congress, the press, and the public. But when war in Europe and Asia threatened America’s shores, the President found himself in a world turned upside down, where his friends became his foes and his enemies his allies.
In addition to being an author, Jordan practices commercial litigation and corporate bankruptcy law at an Atlanta-based firm.
Meet The Citadel’s new provost on live TV during the Goose Creek vs. Summerville game

The annual Goose Creek vs. Summerville football game is always one of the biggest high school rivalries in South Carolina. This year’s game will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Summerville High School’s John McKissick Stadium located on Main St. The game will be shown on WCIV-TV, MyTV Charleston, and MeTV Charleston, as well as being live-streamed here.
Throughout the Lowcountry high school football season, different leaders from the community will be interviewed live during breaks by WCIV. During the Goose Creek vs. Summerville game, the guest will be The Citadel’s Provost and Dean of the College, Dr. Connie Ledoux Book. She is the college’s second-ranking official. Book recently joined the Military College of South Carolina from Elon University where she was associate provost of academic affairs. She has two grown children, including one in college, and is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Retired military combat photojournalist Stacy Pearsall will be photographing veterans for the Veterans Portrait Project as part of the Bulldogs’ Military Appreciation Night football game. There is no cost to participate in the photo shoot once inside the stadium. To purchase tickets for the game, click here. The event is sponsored by Fine Arts at The Citadel. There will be other activities around the stadium and during the game honoring active members of the military, veterans and their families.

In continuation of its tradition as an educational leader in the field of U.S. national security The Citadel will host the second conference on national security studies and intelligence analysis. It is sponsored by the college’s Department of Criminal Justice and will be held September 16 – 18, at Charleston Marriott Hotel on Lockwood Blvd.
The keynote speaker is Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, U.S. Marine Corps, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Stewart formerly served as the commander of Marine Forces Cyber Security.
“The conference promises to enhance our understanding of the security challenges we face on the Southeastern coast of our country and how best to address them on the nation’s behalf,” said Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Bo Moore.

Lost sword of first graduate to be returned to The Citadel

Charles Courtenay Tew was among the first 26 cadets to report to what was originally called the Citadel Academy in 1843. He became the academy’s first honor graduate in 1846, the first president of the academy’s alumni association in 1852, and the first Citadel alumnus to be declared missing in action.
Tew’s sword, which was given to him by his fellow cadets and was engraved, was taken from him when he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on Sept. 17, 1862. It was one of the first battles of the American Civil War to be fought in the North. A Union soldier was said to have taken the sword, but its location was unknown for a century and a half.
In early 2015, the college was contacted by the 33 Signals Regiment Foundation of Ottawa, Canada, and was informed that the sword had been identified. The Canadian regiment wanted to return it to The Citadel. As a result, members of the group will travel from Ottawa to Antietam National Battlefield Park in Maryland for a commemorative event, and then on to Charleston and The Citadel for a reception and sword presentation.
